John Lewis was such a unique and brave voice for African American people, people of color, as well as all of the voiceless and mistreated Americans. He believed in a just and loving America that should be equal and compassionate to all and was willing to fight for this belief with love and forgiveness. I read each page with astonishment as to what he was willing to do when faced with such abhorrent hate and torture. He responded consistently in a peaceful manner with strength in love and light. Jon Meacham wrote this in a straightforward, clear style presenting these critical moments during John Lewis’ life. The message and takeaway for me… America is a better nation for all of the sacrifices made during John Lewis’s lifetime, but we still have a long journey ahead of us and cannot give up hope.
